KU’s 24x7 Reading Room To Open for Students After 3 Years Hiatus

Srinagar: The University of Kashmir, Dargah Hazratbal, on Thursday announced the resumption of the 24/7 reading room for university students from next week after a nearly 3-year hiatus. The reading room facility at the highest learning venue in Valley was suspended in the first week of August 2019, during the former Jammu and Kashmir state special status reading.

The university remained closed due to the subsequent lockdowns triggered by the pandemic, however, once the offline mode of lessons resumed, students were still prevented from using the reading room facilities. “Despite the frequent representations and persuasions, until now we have not been allowed to use the facility,” a group of students told GNS.

"We recently approached the newly appointed Deputy Chancellor Prof. Neelofar Khan and the Chief Librarian 'Allama Iqbal Library' Prof. Peerzada Irshad Ahmad Shah about the issue that had secured us all possible help," they said adding to our total surprise and excitement that we have received the news of the resumption of the facility from next week, today.

"In the interest of bona fide students, Allama Iqbal Library has opened library facilities 24/7 from 14-07-2022," reads a varsity notice, a copy of which is located on GNS.

In the meantime, the students greeted Prof. Neelofar Khan, the VC in charge, and Prof. Peerzada Irshad Ahmad Shah, head librarian of the "Library of Allama Iqbal", for allowing them to use the facility.

 "We express our sincere gratitude to the Honorable Vice Chancellor Prof. Neelofar khan and Chief Librarian Allama Iqbal Prof. Peerzada Irshad Ahmad shah for allowing students to use the 24 × 7 library facility", they said adding that we were waiting for this. day for nearly three years now.

"This facility plays an essential role in keeping our research scholars, students and the entire community engaged with their reading habits," noted research scholar Zahid Ahmad Khan.

When contacted, the chief librarian of the "Allama Iqbal Library", Professor Peerzada Irshad Ahmad Shah, told GNS that he was instructed by the VC and the Chancellor to resume student services in good faith.

"The Honorable Vice Chancellor and the respected Chancellor during their visit to the Allama Iqbal Library advised me to restart the 24 × 7 facility for bona fide students and scholars," he said adding "I am pleased to follow the directions of the worthy Deputy Chancellor to open the facility for our students and scholars ".
